Arnold Mathis, age 86 of Hamilton peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 6:40 AM. He was born in Teges, Kentucky on March 15, 1922 the son of Alfred and Mary (Wilson) Mathis. Arnold was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He was employed as an inspector at Fisher Body for 30 years, retiring in 1978. Arnold pastored many churches in the Hamilton and Richmond, Indiana areas. He was a member of Lindenwald Baptist Church, Benjamin Franklin Lodge #719, and the Order of Eastern Star. On July 6, 1946 in Burning Springs, Kentucky he was united in marriage to Margaret Maupin.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Mathis of Hamilton; two sons, Ron (Amy) Mathis and Mike (Patty) Mathis, both of Hamilton; a daughter, Belinda (David) Richter of Fairfield; nine grandchildren, Steve (Rebekah) Mathis of Hamilton, Kevin (Angie) Mathis of Hamilton, Tracy (Scott) Day of Fairfield, Mike (Kari) Mathis of Hamilton, Andy (Rosetta) Glock of Fairfield, Emily (Jason) Murray of Hamilton, Amy (Ross) Thompson of Monroe, Melissa (Joe) Blower of Hamilton, and Sarah Richter of Fairfield; nine great-grandchildren, Lindsay, Kayla, Courtney, Hannah, Brock, Jake, Kaelyn, Isabella, and Brynna; two brothers, Luther (Dora) Mathis of Manchester, Kentucky and John (Thelma) Mathis of Bradenton, Florida; a special sister-in-law, Monetta Mathis of Hamilton; and many other loved ones and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Jesse, Jeff, Henry, and Clay; and five sisters, Dora, Julie, Nancy, Callie, and Mattie.
Arnold was a kind and gentle man who saw the best in everyone, and always tried to lend a helping hand. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. "Gone Away With a Friend."
Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Monday, August 25, 2008 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Ernie Murray of New Harvest Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Flat Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Arnold’s family extends a special thank you to Hospice of Cincinnati for all their care and support.
