Charles O. "Charlie" Phillips, age 87 of Hamilton, passed away at Ft. Hamilton Hospital on Sunday, May 10, 2009. He was born in Middletown, Ohio on March 19, 1922, the son of Charles T. and Mary (Horn) Phillips. Charlie was raised in Beattyville, Kentucky. A Navy veteran of WW II, he served in Panama. Charlie was employed at Champion Paper for 44 years, retiring in 1985. He was an avid fisherman and U.K. basketball fan. Charlie was a devoted charter member of Hamilton Church of God, where he was active with the maintenance and building programs. On October 20, 1945 in Hamilton he married Hazel Young, who passed away April 18, 1974. On October 18, 1975 in Independence, Kentucky he married Wreathy Rohlman, who passed away on March 5, 1991.
He is survived by two sons, Larry (Cindy) Phillips and Greg (Audrey) Phillips, both of Hamilton; 5 grandchildren, Lauren, Layne, Kyle, Katlyn, and Kristopher "Kritter"; his friends at Millville Avenue McDonalds; and his church family. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives; three brothers, Lloyd Phillips, Thomas Phillips, and Woodrow Phillips; and four sisters, Lela Current, Bonnie Wolfe, Mabel Willis and Delberta Hill.
Funeral services will be held at Hamilton Church of God, 1760 Millville Avenue, on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Alan Weaver officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitations will be held at the church on Wednesday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Thursday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to UPWARDS Children’s Athletic Program at Hamilton Church of God.
