Donald "Don" G. Mays

May 25, 1929 — December 18, 2013

Donald "Don" G. Mays, age 84, was tragically taken on Wednesday, December 18, 2013. He was born in Anderson, Indiana on May 25, 1929 to George and Norma (Miller) Mays. Don was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1948 after serving on board the USS Ardent, Cowie, Frank E. Evans, and finally the USS Gurke. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal. He retired the welding department of Armco (AK Steel) after 38 years of service. Don enjoyed fishing at Hueston Woods on early mornings. At one time, he had his pilot’s license and liked flying his family and friends. When he was a younger man, he enjoyed racing speed boats.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Vera Imogene ("Jeanie" "Sis") Mays; son, C. Joseph Harris of Los Angeles, California; daughter, Donna Lee (John) Richardson of Trenton; granddaughter, Sarah Kathleen (Tyler) Paden of Hampton, Virginia; great granddaughter on the way, Savannah May Paden; step-grandchildren, Niki (Ryan) Gaunt, Brett (Nikki) Richardson, and Rebecca (Michael) Wells; step great great grandchildren, Austin, Carson and Makala Richardson, Ryan and Rory Gaunt; Paytin and Logan Wells, and Wyatt and Braden Wilhoit; sister, June Geisler; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Walter King and William "Bud" Mays. Don was a wonderful Husband, Father, Daddy, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle and Friend to many. He was loved by all and will never be forgotten.

Visitation will be 5-7pm, Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Brown-Dawson-Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue. Funeral service will be 10am, Friday, December 27, 2013, also at the funeral home on Millville Avenue. Burial will follow in Darrtown Cemetery. Don’s family would like to thank those at University Hospital involved with his care, especially the surgeons, doctors and nurses in the NSICU ward. We would also like to thank those who arrived at the accident to help him.
