Doris Mae Cavender

May 13, 1933 — June 10, 2025

Hamilton, Ohio

Doris Mae Cavender, age 92 of Hamilton, passed away on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Doris was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 13, 1933 to Virgil G. and Grace P. (Bolser) Lindsey.

Doris danced and sang on stage and radio from the time she was three years old and continued to dance through high school and a short time after. When she was a junior in high school, she was asked to move to New York to dance with the Rockettes but declined so she could finish her education. Doris and her brother contracted polio during her sophomore year in high school. Dr. Sabin visited them at Children’s Hospital to take spinal samples that he used in his research when developing his oral polio vaccine. Doris graduated from West Chester High School. She showed cattle, sheep, and chickens at the Butler County Fair, taking many awards including Grand Champion steer, which she took to the Chicago Livestock Show. On May 7, 1954, she married the love of her life, James A. Cavender. Doris, along with her husband and four children, raised and showed Great Danes throughout the country. Doris also groomed dogs for twenty years. After her husband died in 1983, Doris opened a small ceramic shop. She expanded and moved her business to Metamora, Indiana and had a gift shop in the town for twenty years where she sold Boyd Bears, porcelain dolls, Beanie Babies, and her hand painted ceramics. When Doris retired from her shop in Metamora, she spent much of her time with her grandchildren, enjoying life to its fullest.

Doris is survived by her children, Kent (Diana) Cavender, Karen (Rick) Hogan, Kraig (Vicki) Cavender, and Kimberly (Mike) Newport; her grandchildren, Ashley, Casey, James, Chelsey, Avery, Grace, Shelby and Bernie; her great-grandchildren, Kyra, Khloe, Kaden, Samuel, Vincent, Rhett, Ember, and Leo; and her nephews, Larry, Jerry and Clarence “Bunky” Lindsey. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Grace Lindsey; her husband of 28 years, James A. Cavender; and her brother, Clarence Wayne Lindsey.
