Douglas W. Hughes

age 81 of Fairfield, passed away at his home on Monday, May 5, 2014. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio, on April 15, 1933 to Cecil and Ola Hughes and recently retired from his real estate business, Douglas Realty which became 4% Realty. Doug graduated from Ross High School in 1951. Soon after, he began working with his father as a builder, then spent many years owning and operating Hughes Hardware in Millville. During this time, he served his community as a dedicated Kiwanis Club member and little league coach. After selling the hardware business, he began building homes in the Butler County area. This led to his 40 year career in the real estate business and many year membership with the Hamilton Fairfield Board of Realtors. Camping, gardening, "tinkering" in his barn and salmon fishing trips to Canada and Michigan were favorite pastimes.

Doug married Lorraine Winkler in 1951, mother to his three children, Pam, Chuck and Peggy. Later in life, he married Edna Varney (deceased). Doug is preceded in death by his parents, Cecil and Ola (Pasley) Hughes and dear friend, Jan Sergent. He is survived by his three children; Pamela Hughes and husband Rob Guthrie, Chuck Hughes, Peggy Bower and husband Dick; brother Karroll (Judy) Hughes and sister Ruthann (John) Liming. He also leaves five grandchildren: Lindsay Bucciarelli (Brian), Andy Bourne, Rusty Bower (Alisha), Lori Miller (Matt), and Lauryn Hughes; four great-grandchildren: Grant, Gracie and Audrey Bower and Brooklyn Bucciarelli; three step children: Lisa (Varney) Hibbard, Lisa Varney and Ronnie Varney; special nieces and nephews; and friends: Lamont and Vicki Jacobs, and Jean Alexander. As an active member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Fairfield, he leaves behind many church friends. The family is grateful to Regina Bryant, who was very helpful to Doug as his health declined.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 5742 Pleasant Avenue, Fairfield, OH 45014. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rolling Hills Baptist Church.
