Lowell Short, age 77 of Hamilton passed away at Hospice of Hamilton on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 6:40 AM. He was born in Lee County, Virginia on June 1, 1931 the son of Walter and Ellie (Flannery) Short. Lowell was employed at Fernald for 44 years, retiring in 1996. He was a member of Washington Lodge No. 17 F&AM and Lindenwald Baptist Church. On August 28, 1951 he married Martha Evelyn Whisman.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Martha Short of Hamilton; two daughters, Alina (Shane Venters) Duncil of Trenton and Sheila Sebree of Dixon, Tennessee; a son, Doug Short; two very special grandchildren, Alana and Braydon; a brother, James Short of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; five sisters, Doris Dinsmore of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, Jean Payne of Gilbertville, Kentucky, Freda (Bill) Bowen of Keokee, Virginia, Linda Kelly and Chloe Ledington, both of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John Short.
Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Raymond Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Millville Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to Hospice of Hamilton, and Dr. Edward Crane for their loving care and support and a very special thank you to Doris and Devonna Dinsmore for the compassion shown to Lowell with their weekly phone calls and cards. Lowell will be sadly and deeply missed by all who knew him.
