Marvin Hubbard, Sr. was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at Hospice of Hamilton just two weeks shy of his 83 rd birthday.
Marvin was born on February 12, 1939 to Pauline and Cecil Hubbard in Hammond, Kentucky in Knox County.
He was preceded in death by his parents Pauline and Cecil Hubbard, son Marvin Hubbard, Jr., brothers Paul Kenneth, Ernie and Jerry, and nephews James W. Day and James Hubbard.
He is survived by his ex-wife and mother of his children Janet Haven, son Dale Hubbard, daughter Melissa Hubbard, only grandchild/son Presley Walker Hubbard Prater, sister Faye (Doug) Buzan, brother Willard (Donna) Hubbard, sister Sue (Jimmy) Day, in-laws Sam & Peg Hall, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Marvin was educated in Hammond, KY Flat Lick School District through eighth grade, before the family moved to Ohio. As a seventh grader at Flat Lick Jr. High, Marvin was voted Mr. Flat Lick from among all his classmates.
He continued his public education in Hamilton City School District. During his senior year, he was a passenger in a serious car accident leaving him pinned under the car and in a coma for 21 days. Yet while recuperating and with the help of a tutor, he was still able to graduate with his 1956 class of Hamilton High.
The oldest of seven siblings, Marvin was very proud of his brothers and sisters' successes and never missed a chance to brag about them and add that he is their oldest brother.
Marvin served proudly in the United States Army. He completed basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky. His supply school training was completed at Fort Lee, Virginia. For the remainder of his service, Marvin was stationed at Camp Irwin, California, arriving two weeks after Elvis Presley had just left.
Upon return to civilian life, his first job was as a pin setter at Lindenwald Bowling Lanes, as well as working at Logston’s Market where he met the love of his life, Janet. He worked briefly at Pabst bottling company in Hamilton, before being laid off. Next he worked at Omar Bakery, back when eggs and milk were home delivered on a daily basis. But his application at Champion Paper Company finally came calling. He retired from Champion Paper Company in Rewinders after 32 years. He often said he credits the paper mills' rotating shift work for allowing him to be able to attend his children's sporting events and extra curricular activities. He claims he was fortunate to always be able to schedule work around his family’s activities, not the other way around. He was able to drive to away sports games and school field trips and taxied other kids home after practices.
Marvin was a country gentleman at heart. He was very generous with what he had to share. He never said no to any kid knocking on his door selling candy or raffle tickets for some fundraiser and supported all his nieces and nephews in their endeavors.
Marvin was an avid local sports fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Bengals. He enjoyed listening to Reds' ballgames on radio sitting outside at night under the stars like he was actually at the stadium. But nothing compared to him cheering on his children when they played sports. He loved the thrill of a nailbiting game and then reliving all the highlights on the drive home with every passenger chiming in.
Marvin enjoyed visiting his two brothers Jerry and Ernie in Tampa and his cousins in Barbourville, Kentucky.
One of his fondest memories was driving his daughter to Columbus, in 1983, when his nephew Jamie was playing in state AA baseball semifinals for New Miami High School and also watching the HHS boys baseball team win the state AAA baseball championship then return home to watch his daughter graduate from HHS that same night!
In the past year, Marvin suffered many falls and received excellent emergency and hospitalization care from the following local hospitals: Bethesda Butler, Fort Hamilton, UC West Chester, Good Samaritan and Kettering Medical Center.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Hamilton for their compassionate care during Marvin's final Days on earth specifically family friend Theresa Harvey, LSW at Doverwood Nursing Home, who was like a daughter to him advocating and looking out for him, as well as Rev. Doug Dunlap who serves as Chaplain at Doverwood and leads chair aerobics that Marvin enjoyed.
