Mary Cheek

Mary Louise Cheek, age 75 of Brookville, IN, passed away at her home on December 26, 2017 with her loving children by her side. She was born in Deer Lick (Laurel Co.) Kentucky on March 26, 1942, the daughter of Lohren F. Martin, Sr. and Mabel L. Williams Martin. On May 15, 1959, she married Norman Paul Cheek, Sr. They were happily married for 45 years at the time of his passing in 2004. In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Willa Martin, Norman Martin, and Lohren F. Martin Jr. She is survived by her devoted children, Linda Louise Cheek of Hamilton, OH and Norman Paul Cheek Jr. of Brookville, IN; her sister, Shirley Martin Chandler of Louisville, KY; her beloved granddaughter, Heather Marie Cheek Loomis and her husband, Greg of Thornton, CO; and her two great grandsons, Jacob and Landen Loomis of Thornton, CO.

From the day she was born, Mary was known for her sunny and uplifting personality. She had many talents, including quilting, crocheting, knitting, and gardening. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, IN. She also was certified as a Master Gardener through Purdue University. Mary was always willing to help a friend (or stranger) in need, and impacted the lives of many people through her various volunteer activities. She drove cancer patients from Marion to Indianapolis for treatment, made quilts for the Franklin County EMS to give to patients, and crocheted caps for premature infants, as well as many other endeavors. She was also known for her love of cats and hostas, and especially for making the best sausage gravy and peanut brittle in the world!

Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 11:00AM at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Ave., Hamilton, OH with her nephew, Rev. Rick Cheek officiating. Her son, great grandsons, and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Mt. Carmel, IN. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00AM – 11:00AM at the funeral home.
