Melvin "Mel" Murphy

Melvin "Mel" Murphy, age 89 of Hamilton passed away in Hospice of Hamilton on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 11:30 PM. He was born in Hamilton on January 8, 1922 the son of Alfred and Nanny (Laws) Murphy. Mel was a veteran of World War II with the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, serving in the Rhineland and Central Europe, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Amvets Post #1983, American Legion Post #38, VFW Post #7670, the Eagles Lodge #407, and a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. Mel was employed as an unloader for Champion Paper for 42 years, retiring in 1987. On July 9, 1941 in Hamilton he was married to Viola Loman, and she preceded him in death in 1999.

He is survived by one son, Douglas (Sandra) Murphy of Hamilton; one daughter, Barb (Arnie) Adams of Hamilton; a son-in-law, Glen Barnhill of Hamilton; two sisters, Violet Winkler of Concord, North Carolina and Onieda VanOstram of Hamilton; eight grandchildren, Rick (Marilyn) Barnhill, Jenny (David) Lowe, Michele (Rod) Ritzi, Chris Adams, Amy (Bill) Getz, Kelli (Chad) Chenoweth, Staci (Chuck) Hansel, and Katie Adams (Chris Annarino); and also eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Barnhill in 2002; by one brother, Kenneth Murphy; and one sister, Nora Garrod.

Funeral services will be held at the Brown-Dawson-Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Mike Carmody, Pastor of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thank you to Hospice of Hamilton for their loving care and concern.
