Michael A. Mathis age 58 of Fairfield Township entered a land of sweet peace and rest on Friday morning May 22, 2009 at Christ Hospital. On the shore waving banners to welcome him home was Jesus Christ his Savior and his Mom and Dad who preceded him just a few months ago. What a reunion! Mike fought a courageous battle with cancer and he won!!
Mike was born in Hamilton on December 27, 1950 the son of Arnold and Margaret (Maupin) Mathis. He was a 1969 graduate of Fairfield High School. He was a member of Field of Grace Church and the F&AM Benjamin Franklin Lodge 719. He was employed by Interstate Brands for 30 years, retiring in 2002. The past six years he was a bus driver for Fairfield City Schools. Mike was a people person, and his goal for the day was to make someone laugh or smile. He never met a stranger. On December 18, 1970 in Hamilton, he married Patty Cook.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife of 38 years Patty Mathis of Fairfield Township; his children Tracy (Scott) Day of Fairfield, and Michael (Kari) Mathis Jr. of Fairfield Township; his four beautiful grandchildren, whom he dearly loved, Lindsay, Jake, Brock, and Baby Kaelyn; a brother Ron (Amy) Mathis of Hamilton; a sister Belinda (Dave) Richter of Fairfield; a sister-in-law, Betty (Paul) Marshall of Trenton; a brother-in-law Bob (Pat) Cook of Louisville, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Lois Cook of Hamilton; a devoted aunt Monetta Mathis of Hamilton; and many special nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many many treasured friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Avenue, on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 2:00PM with Pastor Arnie Turner and Rev. Ernie Murray officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Burial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5:00PM to 8:00PM.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Field of Grace Church and all area churches who helped us along this journey. The family also wishes to thank the Fairfield Transportation Dept. and to Fairfield North School Principals and teachers for the love and care that they have shown. A heartfelt thanks to Dr. Phillip Leming and all the angels at Mercy Cancer Care, Christ Hospital and Hospice of Cincinnati. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to Fairfield North Elementary PTC, 6116 Morris Road, Hamilton, Ohio 45011.
