Phillip S. Gassert Sr., age 70 of Hamilton passed away at Glen Meadows on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at 3:40 AM. He was born in Dayton, Kentucky on December 17, 1936 the son of William Louis and Flora (Stith) Gassert. Phil served 20 years of honorable service in the U.S. Marine Corps as a respected staff sergeant, active from January 14, 1954 to July 31, 1973. He was deployed to Vietnam from March 28, 1968 to April 16, 1969. He was employed at Southwestern Ohio Steel for 10 years, retiring from Fairfield City Schools after 7 years employment. Phil was an avid John Wayne movie fan.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sidnia L. (Mullenix) Gassert of Hamilton; three sons, Phillip S. Gassert Jr., Jon W. Gassert Sr., and Thomas A. Gassert, all of Hamilton; six grandchildren, Ciara, Felicia, Phillip III, Chad, and Jon Gassert Jr., and Crystal Singleton; his twin sister, Phyllis Gassert Raitt of West Chester; and a stepsister, Roberta Hayes of Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Richard and William Gassert; siblings Otto Goerner, Lou Goerner, Florence Gassert, and Gordon Gassert.
Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on Monday, December 3, 2007 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Terry McCain of Mason Baptist Church, Mason, Kentucky officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Butler County Memorial Park. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The family extends a special thank you to Hospice of Cincinnati and the staff of Glen Meadows.
