Rev. Harville H. Duncan Jr.

October 8, 1943 — October 16, 2022

Harville H. Duncan, Jr., passed from this life to his forever home on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at University Hospital in West Chester, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Elizabeth Hopkins and his father, Harville H. Duncan, Sr.

He is survived by the love of his life since 1964, Lois (Kolar) Duncan, his sister, Linda (Ray) Fox, and his brother Robert (Shirley) Duncan. He is also survived by two wonderful daughters, Dana (Dave) Hicks, Julie (Daryl) Pierce, and 3 grandchildren, Caleb Hicks, Regan (Zack) Branch, and Spencer Pierce, many nieces and nephews, and close friends.

He split his time in high school between Cohn High School (9th & 10th grade) where he played football and Hume Fogg Vocational Technical High School (11th & 12th grade), both in Nashville, Tennessee. A little known fact about his time at Hume Fogg is that he majored in art and designed the official flag for the city of Nashville that flew over the city's capital beginning in May of 1961. After graduating from high school, he worked as a draftsman for the Nashville Water Works Dept. Later, he graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. He taught at Hampton Junior High in Hampton, Virginia and at Henderson High School in Henderson, KY. Years later, he received his Masters Degree from Mt. Vernon Nazarene University.

Harville loved Kentucky basketball and Tennessee football and his childhood hero was Mickey Mantle.

While he enjoyed his college sports, his life's work was in his calling to follow God's will into pastoral ministry. He pastored churches in Henderson, KY, Owensboro, KY, Campbellsville, KY, Dayton, OH, Leesburg, FL, Charlottesville, VA, Franklin, OH, and Hamilton, Ohio. He was a scholar, a teacher, a theologian, and an unashamed preacher of the Word of God. He was as equally enthralled preparing the Gospel as he was delivering the Gospel. And was all the more inspired when one of God's lost sheep found its way to the Shepherd. He loved every aspect of being a pastor and it showed.

But, if you had to pin him down with a single question as to what he loved most, it would be his family. He loved any excuse to get together with his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. We often joked that we got together on all the non-traditional holidays like Arbor Day and Victory in Europe Day, etc. Any excuse was a good excuse to get together.

If you search your mind, you can undoubtedly find a time when Harville made a significant difference in your life. And your testimony mirrors the thousands of lives that his life has touched.

"Well done, good and faithful servant! Come and share your master's happiness!'"

- Matthew 25:23
