Richard S. Holzberger, age 70 of Hamilton, passed away at University Hospital in Cincinnati on Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was born in Hamilton on July 19, 1945 to Stanley and Mary (Dowd) Holzberger. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving as a Sergeant in the United States Army from 1965-1968. Richard was employed as a Hamilton City Police Officer from 1968-1988; was the Butler County Sheriff from 1989-1993; and was also head of security at Elder Beerman’s for many years. In his later years he owned and operated Holzberger’s Downtown Convenience/Christmas Store. He also served on the Hamilton City Council from 1996-2004. He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police #38, Monkeys Mutual Aid Society, Knights of Columbus Father Butler Council #968, American Legion, AMVETS Post #1983, Lions, Kiwanis, Moose Lodge #36, Izaak Walton League, VFW, past member of the Elks Lodge #93. He was an active member of St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Rebecca Holzberger; his children, David (Susan) Holzberger, Jennifer (Bob Trupp) Holzberger, Amy (Steve Gay) Holzberger, Amy (Jeremy Lester) Italiano, Kristin (Brent) Clemmons; step children, Julie Italiano and Nicholas Italiano; six grandchildren, Payton, D.J., Lane, Andrew, Melissa, and Josh; two great grandsons, Braylen and Landon; three brothers, Fredric (Julie) Holzberger, John Holzberger, and Ed Holzberger. He was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle Johnny and aunt Ruth Dowd.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Julie Billiart Catholic Church, 224 Dayton St., on Monday, February 1, 2016 at 10AM with Father Michael Pucke celebrant. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2016 from 4PM-8PM at Princeton Pike Church of God, 6101 Princeton Glendale Road Hamilton, OH 45011, with a Knights of Columbus, FOP, American Legion, and special proclomation by Hamilton City Mayor, Pat Moeller to start at 7PM. Dick dedicated his life to helping others. He had numerous causes he supported, various teams he coached, and countless lives he touched. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Serve City and to Shared Harvest Food Bank.
