Verlin C. Garland, age 79 of Laurel, Indiana passed away at Hospice of Hamilton on Monday, May 3, 2010. He was born in Corbin, Kentucky on August 23, 1930 the son of Albert and Lottie (Allen) Garland. Verlin was employed as a deputy sheriff and farmer in Franklin County, Indiana.
He is survived by three children, Phoebe Taylor of Winterhaven, Florida, Verla (Bruce) McQueen of Laurel, Indiana, and Angie Ivers (Mark) Harris of Hamilton; five stepchildren, Marla (Steve) Cupp, Debbie (Larry) Southard, Richard (Gail) Barkley, all of Hamilton, Beverly Glancy and Lesa Barkley, both of Oxford; two sisters, Lida (Jerry) Hundley of Laurel, Indiana and Myrtle Hurst of New Trenton, Indiana; numerous grandchildren, including special grandchildren Jeffery King, Danny Ivers, Stephanie Ivers, Sherri Ivers, and Verlin’s "baby girl" Jalyn Harris; numerous great-grandchildren; and two loving dogs, Smokey and Lola. He was preceded in death by his parents; the love of his life, his wife Juanita (Riley) Garland; a daughter, Sharon Joiner; two brothers, Virgil and William Garland; and two sisters, Lola Kibbey and Daisy Webb.
Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on Thursday, May 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM with Pastor Tom Marshall of Family Worship Center of Blooming Grove, Indiana officiating. Burial will follow in Hickory Flat Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The family extends a special thank you to the staffs of Fort Hamilton Hospital and Hospice of Hamilton for their care and support.
