Virgil Lawrence Amburgy

August 1, 1927 — September 24, 2016

Virgil Lawrence Amburgy Surrounded by his loved ones on Saturday, September 24, 2016, his final day was peaceful. He left quietly at 7:30 p.m. and entered into his rest with Jesus Christ and a host of family and friends in Heaven.

Virgil L. Amburgy, of Fairfield, was born in Lerose, Kentucky on August 1, 1927, to Cuba Lee and Effie (Spencer) Amburgy, the fourth of twelve children. The Amburgy’s moved to Morrow, Ohio, where he was educated. The family farmed and he worked in his father’s lumber business for four years. Virgil served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1953. He spent eighteen months in Germany and was honorably discharged as Sergeant.

He married Elizabeth Turner, of South Lebanon, Ohio, on July 17, 1955. She is a licensed minister with the Church of God, Cleveland, Tennessee. Together, they served twenty-five years on the staff at the Princeton Pike Church of God and are now finishing twenty-six years on the staff at the Stratford Heights Church of God. They traveled in the West Indies and many other countries preaching the Gospel and pastored the Fairfield Church of God for seven years. Virgil and Liz taught classes on Marriage and Family that were attended by hundreds of couples at the three churches. Virgil ran a trucking business for many years, but kept God’s work at his top priority.

Virgil is survived by his wife Elizabeth and sons Lanny, of Fairfield, and Gregory, of Cincinnati; two grandchildren, Adam Amburgy, of Cincinnati, and Sarah (Tommy) Marks, of Savannah, GA. He leaves two brothers, Earl (Kathleen) Amburgy, of South Lebanon, and Bob (Mona) Amburgy, of Oregonia, along with five sisters; Eula Dare, of Cleveland. TN; Ina Taylor, of Wilmington; Linda (John) Grooms, of Centerville, Sue (Roger) Johnson, of Lebanon; and Rose (Gale) Bailey, of Miamisburg. Preceding him in death were two brothers, Russell, of Fairfield, and Willard, of Dayton, along with two sisters; Jean Souther, of Cleveland, TN; and Ona Shaw of Wilmington.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 29, 2016 from 5-8 pm at Brown Dawson Flick Funeral Home, 1350 Millville Ave., Hamilton, OH 45013. A visitation will be held Friday September 30, 2016 at Stratford Heights Church of God, 4419 Nelson Rd, Middletown, OH from 11-12 noon followed by a Celebration of Virgil’s life at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
