Walter "Shorty" Bowling, age 81 of Hamilton passed away at Ft. Hamilton Hospital on Wednesday, April 15, 2009. He was born in Rockcastle County, Kentucky on April 16, 1927 the son of Lester and Claria (Patterson) Bowling. Shorty was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force, serving during World War II from 1945 to 1947 in the 579 Air MAT Squadron as a tail gunner and received the Victory Medal. He was employed in construction. He was a member of Union Local #534. Shorty enjoyed fishing, and was an avid Reds fan. On July 7, 1951 in Maud, he married Catherine C. Jones, who preceded him in death in 2001.
He is survived by a son, Doug (Cathy) Bowling of Hamilton; a daughter, Judy Pater of Hamilton; five grandchildren, Rusty Pater, Amy (Heath) Cline, Leah Bowling, Gina Bowling, all of Hamilton, and Donna (Alan) Krehbiel of Birmingham, Alabama; fifteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Cloyd (Jewel) Bowling of Broadhead, Kentucky; three sisters, Clara Alcorn, Darlene Bowling, and Thelma Bowling, all of Broadhead, Kentucky; and numerous nephews, nieces including special niece Shirley Duggins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a grandson, Aaron Pater; and eight siblings.
Funeral service will be held at the Brown-Dawson Funeral Home, 330 Pershing Avenue, on Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at 1:00 PM with Brother Ernie Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in West Chester Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 PM.
