Joseph "Joe" Newlin Obituary

Joseph Gerard Newlin, age 64, of Oxford, Ohio, suffered a heart attack and passed away on Friday, April 14, 2023.

Fondly known as Joe, he was born in Akron, Ohio, on January 15, 1959, to John and Ann Newlin. Joe settled with his family in 1969 in Avon Lake, Ohio, where he attended St. Joseph School and Parish, and graduated in 1978 from Avon Lake High School. Joe attended West Liberty University, on a football scholarship. He then transferred to Toledo University, before graduating from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, with a degree in Botany in 1982. Joe continued his education and earned a second degree in accounting at Akron University.

Along with some of his best buddies, he started a landscaping company named SoundGarden. Unfortunately, that did not take off as planned. Joe worked at Precision Castparts as Controller before becoming The City of Avon Lake Finance Director. He worked for seven years for the City of Avon Lake before relocating with his wife, children, and mother-in-law, back to his college town of Oxford, Ohio. Joe was Finance Director for the City of Oxford from 2008 until his death.

Joe was a lover of nature, gardening, and walking. He recently started teaching himself how to play the guitar after taking a long break. In addition to the love he shared with his family and friends, Joe was passionate about giving back. In recent years he was a member of the Oxford Lions, The Oxford Men's Club, and The United Way. He enjoyed volunteering at community events and with his children's activities. Joe was also a hero to many. He was a bone marrow donor. Upon his death, he was a tissue/cornea donor with LifeCenter, helping upwards of 75-100 people, and thanks to Cindy Hertensteiner, Joe donated blood an astonishing 58 times over the course of his life! Joe positively impacted this world and will be truly missed.

Joe is survived by his wife, Rachelle, and three children, Ralph "Brady ", Anna, and Jack; his siblings, Rebecca Newlin and John (Elaine) Newlin; many in-laws, nieces, nephews and godchildren (CJ, Jon, Max); many friends who were like family, including Michael & Cindy Hertenstiener (Alex, Max), Jeff and Lynn Brausch (CJ, Jon, Jeremy), and Geoff Smith to name a few of the many. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann Newlin; and his mother-in-law, Alice, who he treated as his own.
