Macy Fugate Obituary

Macy Sue Fugate (Selkirk) age 83, passed peacefully at Hospice of Hamilton, due to cardiovascular complications, on Friday, November 5, 2021, surrounded by the ones she loved.

Macy was born, March 30, 1938, in Weeksbury, Kentucky, the youngest daughter of Collin Selkirk and Cecelia (Watsell) Selkirk.  She attended Our Lady of the Mountains School in Paintsville, Kentucky, and was a 1956 graduate of Milan High School, Milan, Indiana. She was a true warrior, surviving Polio at the age of 4 and two bouts with cancer in her 60’s.

Macy moved to Hamilton, Ohio, from Milan, Indiana, in 1957, where she resided at Mercy Hospital’s, Gonzaga Hall. While attending patients in the emergency room at Mercy Hospital she met her first love, Elmer Fugate, who was being treated for a football-related knee injury. Macy and Elmer would marry in 1958.  Macy decided to become a full-time mother when their first child, Randy was born in 1959 and lovingly continue that role with their second child, Jennifer (1961), and third Angela (1970).  Macy would truly become the matriarch of her family when she became a grandmother in 1979, dedicating her time to loving, caring, and educating her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, until her passing.  Macy was an artist, a gardener, a chef, a music lover, a reader, and a caring and devoted friend.  She taught each of her loved ones that the secret to all great food is butter, lots of butter.  There are numerous pictures of Macy with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren sitting on the kitchen counter as she taught them to cook and how to properly care for an iron skillet. Music was always playing in her home, she loved Elvis, and most importantly, she loved going out to watch her son Randy’s band play. She was and will always be the best chair dancer.  As an avid gardener, she also raised and tended beautiful flower beds, which each of her children carries on, with her Hostas and Stelladora’s.

Macy was lucky enough to meet her 2nd love, Larry Puckett in 1982. Larry and Macy would remain together until his passing in 2019.  Macy and Larry cared deeply for each other, being one another's caregivers,  partners in crime, and were the best fishing buddies.  The two were inseparable for 37 years.

Macy was a member of the Queen of Peace church and a founding member of Hamilton’s Brush and Easel club, which she also named.  She also enjoyed spending time and attending activities with her friends and neighbors at Eden Park Senior community.

Macy is survived by her brothers, Joseph (Melanie) Selkirk, Paul (Ginny) Selkirk, her children, Randy (Anne) Fugate, Jennifer Sibert, Angela Fugate (Kevin Holbrock). Her grandchildren, Jeremy (Natasha) Fugate, Ashley Philpot (Orion Trist), Timothy Fugate, Christina Fugate (Jim Castle), Demi Stone (Chris Boggs), Lauren Sibert (Shayne Barnes), Skye (Stephen) Collins, and Kyle Boomershine. Her great-grandchildren, Kaycie, Jenna, Lilly, Isaac, Michael, Landyn, Arden, Cecelia, and great-great-grandchild, Alexander James.

She is preceded in death by her parents Cecelia and Collin Selkirk, her sisters, Barbara Osterling and Norma Day, her husband Elmer Fugate, her partner, Larry Puckett, and her grandson, Casey Fugate.

Macy will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her legacy will be carried on by every life she touched, every story she told, every song she sang, every recipe she shared, and every split of her beloved plants.
