Ruth Cornett Obituary

Ruth A. Cornett, age 84 of Oxford, passed away at Hospice of Hamilton on Wednesday, May 31, 2023. Ruth was born in Cinda, Kentucky on February 4, 1939, to James Kilburn and Frances (Jones) Kilburn. Ruth enjoyed taking care of her flowers, her beloved Cincinnati Reds and cooking.  If you left her house hungry, it was your own fault!  She was famous for her cornbread and her Sunday Suppers.  She spent her life caring for others as a nurse aide, and then in the activities department at Golden Years Nursing Home.  There was always a house full of kids, between her own and their friends, that she looked after.  She made sure her children had every opportunity to succeed or participate in any activity or interest.  She was always involved with her children, by coaching softball, Boy scout den mother, and 4-H advisor. Ruth had an encouraging love of music by purchasing many guitars over the years.

Then came the grandchildren, and “what happened at grandma’s house, stayed at grandma’s house”.  Grandma allowed them to “plunder” and dance on her coffee table while eating an ear of corn on the cobb, to “catering” a lasagna prom dinner in her home for a group of high school seniors, to fostering the love of working with the elderly by taking one to work with her every weekend; and then figuring out why “babies are meant for young women” by running after the youngest one.  We hope they always remember spending time at grandma’s house and how lucky they were to have her.

Ruth is survived by her children, David (Christina) Cornett, Deanna (Darin) Sebastian Darryl Cornett; her grandchildren, Jared Cornett, Brooke Cornett, Kenady Westbrook, Kamdyn Sebastian; and two bonus grandchildren, Christopher (Cheyenne) Sebastian and Cody (Tiffanie) Sebastian; her sisters, Lucille Eldridge, Pat Smith, Peggy Clark, Shirley (Jerry) Kintner; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her spouse, Elijah “Pud” Cornett; her son, Doug Cornett; her parents, James Kilburn and Frances Kilburn-Eldridge; and her brothers, Charlie Kilburn, Donald Kilburn, and Paul Kilburn.
